Past Queens

106th Celebration Queen

Maria Murray is the daughter of Judge Samuel Murray and Margie Murray of Hanover Township.  She is a senior at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, where she is a third year starter on the Varsity Field Hockey team.  At Liberty, she also played flute in the Grenadier Band and is Captain of the MiniTHON fundraiser for children with pediatric cancer.  She is also a Senator in Student Government and a member of the National Honor Society.  In the community, she has been a volunteer and Junior Board Member at Camelot for Children, an organization helping children with disabilities.  After high school, she plans on attending college to further her education.  She has an older brother and sister, Joseph and Emily.

Maria can trace her Sicilian heritage and lineage to Santo Stefano Di Camastra through many generations.  As a young child, her great-grandmother, Maria Frinzi Boccadora, emigrated from Santo Stefano to the United States in 1910 with her mother, Sebestiana Pulvino Frinzi.  The family has grown and remained in the Easton and Bethlehem areas since that time.

In honoring her family’s Sicilian and Italian heritage, Maria has been in the Queen’s Court as an attendant for six years.  She is extremely proud to be part of her family’s long involvement and volunteerism in our Society.  Her great-uncle, Anthony Frinzi, was the first President of the Holy Cross Society and her great-grandmother, Maria Frinzi Boccadora, was one of the original founders of the Women’s Auxiliary.  Maria’s grandmother, Mary Boccadora Murray, was the Chairlady of the Coffee Shop for many years, and her great-aunt, Bessie Boccadora was an annual worker in the Coffee Shop and a longtime officer in the Auxiliary.  Maria’s Godmother, Ann Marie (Cicero) Williams, has been the Chairlady of the Coffee Shop and was the Auxiliary Treasurer for many years.  She is honored to follow her sister, Emily, as Queen of the annual celebration.  Emily was crowned in 2007.  Both of her parents are longtime members and volunteers of the Society, and although her brother Joseph lives in New York City, he continues to be a member and returns every year to volunteer at the celebration.  It has been a fulfilling experience for Maria to help her mother and Godmother in the Coffee Shop every year and also help in preparing the Chapel before the start of the celebration.

Maria wants everyone to know how important the celebration is to her.  She believes that it has made her more connected with her Sicilian heritage and family.  Through her involvement over the years, she has been able to learn more about her ancestors and her Sicilian and Italian culture.  As part of the celebration surrounding the 100th Anniversary in 2011, Maria was provided with the unique experience of traveling to Sicily with her family to visit our hometown of Santo Stefano Di Camastra.  She will never forget the memories of staying in Santo Stefano and visiting Letto Santo where her ancestors celebrated mass and the annual festival.  Most importantly, the Holy Cross Society has enhanced her Catholic and Christian faith.  Maria is proud to be crowned Queen for our 106th celebration.

Gabriella Duffy is the daughter of Paul and Sera (Sottosanti) Duffy of Nazareth, PA. A Junior at Bethlehem Catholic High School, she is looking forward to attending college after graduation, majoring in international business. She plays tennis for BECA, as well as being a member of the Key Club, Fact Club and Debate Team. She is also serve as a Peer Listener. She has two brothers, Michael and Joseph.

Gabriella’s family heritage and connection to Santo Stefano has been very important to her. Her grandfather, Salvatore Sottosanti immigrated from Santo Stefano in 1912, settling in Easton. He would grow up in the Easton community of immigrants from Santo Stefano. Her grandmother, Maria Maiorana Sottasanti also lived in Santo Stefano. They would meet here in the 1960’s and eventually Maria came to Easton where they were married and lived. They had two daughters, Gabriella’s mother Serafina and aunt, Maria.

She has been very fortunate to be raised in the strong culture of Sicily and Santo Stefano. Her first trip back to Sicily was when she was only a baby. The family has traveled multiple times since then to visit Santo Stefano and all of our family there. She has even been fortunate enough to celebrate Letto Santo in Santo Stefano. Her youngest brother, Joseph, was baptized in Sicily, and this year she will be there once again for his godmother’s wedding.

The traditions of the Sicilian culture are a very important part of her life. Mass, Sunday pasta, family and the yearly Letto Santo serve to give her a strong foundation of who she is and how she is able to continue these traditions into the next generation as a proud descendant of Santo Stefano di Camastra.

The Holy Cross celebration is one of her favorite parts of the year. She loves the celebration of her heritage and coming together with all the people that share that same heritage. She has served on the Holy Cross Court for over 7 years and has enjoyed every year. Gabriella is honored to be the queen of the court that she has been a part of for so many years.
